Road in W. Japan reopens after sinkhole filled

Xinhua, November 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

A road in western Japanese city of Fukuoka reopened Tuesday after a huge sinkhole which appeared a week ago was filled with soil.

Traffic resumed on the road near a busy station in the Hakata district of the city early Tuesday morning. Utilities have been fully restored and an evacuation order issued for nearby buildings has been lifted.

A road cave measuring about 30 meters long, 27 meters wide and 15 meters deep occurred a week ago, causing traffic disruption and blackouts in neighboring areas.

The cause of the incident was suspected to be linked to an ongoing construction of a subway line nearby, according to local media.

Fukuoka Mayor Soichiro Takashima has called for a third-party panel to investigate the cause of the incident.

Ground soil experts declared there were no safety problems after checking the ground's strength by a road roller. Endit
