EU adds 17 Syrian ministers, central bank governor to sanction list

Xinhua, November 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

The European Union (EU) on Monday added 17 Syrian ministers and the country's central bank governor to a sanction list which targets those "responsible for the violent repression" against Syrian civilians.

These Syrian high-ups under the decision will face a travel ban and an asset freeze, the Council of the EU said in a press release.

The decision brings to 234 the total number of persons subject to these restrictive measures for "the violent repression" in Syria.

In addition, 69 entities are targeted by an asset freeze.

More broadly, sanctions currently in place against Syria include an oil embargo, restrictions on certain investments, a freeze of the assets of the Syrian central bank within the EU.

The EU said it remains committed to finding a lasting solution to the conflict in Syria, as there is no military solution to the Syrian civil war. Enditem
