Uganda beats Congo Brazzaville 1-0 in 2018 World Cup qualifier

Xinhua, November 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

Uganda scored in the 18th minute to beat visiting Congo Brazzaville 1-0 in a 2018 World Cup qualifier played on Saturday.

Farouk Miya scored the lone goal with a low shot past goalkeeper Wolfij Mongondza.

Substitue Kizito William Luwagga who came on as a substitute for injured defender Murushid Juuko provided the perfect cross that Miya scored.

Uganda continued to press in the Group E match played at the Mandela National Stadium but missed several scoring chances.

Delarge Dzon for Congo Brazzaville kept the Uganda Cranes defenders on their toes, but still failed to beat Uganda' s second choice goalkeeper who was in goal for the injured Denis Onyango.

"We are happy that although we missed several chances, we managed to win the game and now we have four points in the group," said Uganda's coach Milutin Sredojevic after the game.

Three Congo Brazzaville players were booked for bad fouls.

Sredojevic said after drawing 0-0 away to Ghana in the first game last month, it is good that his team responded well and now picked the three vital points.

Congo Brazzaville Coach Pierre Lechantre together with his captain didnot attend the press conference after the game.

Congo Brazzaville lost the first game 2-1 to Egypt and the 1-0 loss to Uganda now dents their hopes of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup to take place in Russia. Endit
