Brazil dismantles squad accused of 100 murders

Xinhua, November 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Brazilian authorities on Friday said they have dismantled a "death squad" accused of having murdered more than 100 people since 2010, including women and children.

The Federal Police said the extrajudicial killings were carried out by members of the military police in the central state of Goias, who would report the victims as having died in clashes with them, even though the dead included minors, teenagers and women.

A Federal Police investigation into the killings, called Operation Sixth Commandment, had issued arrest warrants for high-level members of the military police in Goias, as well as several lawyers.

Some of the killings occurred while the officers were on duty, and with no apparent motive, the Federal Police said.

The operation follows another similar investigation in 2011 that led to the arrest of 19 police officers. Enditem
