Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is set to commission the newly upgraded and expanded Victoria Falls International Airport on Nov. 18, an official said Friday.
Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) general manager David Chawota confirmed completion of the airport development project, carried out by China Jiangsu International and financed through a 150 million-U.S.-dollar loan from China Export-Import Bank.
According to CAAZ, the new Victoria Falls International Airport features a new international terminal building, a new runway, extended parking areas for aircraft, new road networks and a refurbished domestic terminal with a capacity of handling 1.5 million passengers per annum.
Prior to the upgrading that began in 2013, the airport had a handling capacity of 500,000 passengers per year.
"The new state-of-the-art airport will now accommodate long haul flights from around the globe which is expected to increase the inflow of tourists to Zimbabwe," Chawota said.
The airport is the gateway to Victoria Falls, a world heritage site and one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Endit
