Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said he hoped the United States and Belgium would continue to defend their common values of freedom and tolerance, after Republican candidate Donald Trump won the 45th U.S. presidency on Wednesday.
In a statement, Michel congratulated Trump on his victory in the U.S. presidential elections, which he referred to as "remarkable."
"The American people have spoken out. I wish you success in carrying out the responsibilities of this high office," Michel said in the message addressed to Trump.
He also expressed the wish that Trump would be a president who unites and would be open to "a respectful dialogue."
The newly-elected U.S. president is faced with many challenges, in particular the international fight against terrorism and radicalization, climate change, and a policy for sustainable economic growth, said the prime minister.
"I hope that you will continue to lend your support to the European project and help to guarantee continuing security within the NATO framework," he added. Endit
