UN chief condemns attack against peacekeepers in DRC

Xinhua, November 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Tuesday slammed an attack in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which killed a Congolese girl and injured dozens of peacekeepers and civilians.

Two civilians and a total of 32 peacekeepers of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, or MONUSCO, were injured Tuesday as an improvised explosive device exploded in the Kyeshero district of Goma, North Kivu province, said a statement from Ban's spokesperson.

The UN chief called for swift action to bring the perpetrators of this attack to justice.

MONUSCO has sent quick reaction force to the scene and deployed an investigation team, which includes explosives experts, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said earlier in the day.

The UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC was first established in 1999. In 2010, the UN Security Council renamed the mission to MONUSCO to implement mandates including the protection of civilians and supporting the DRC government in its stabilization and peace consolidation efforts. Endi
