Latvian gov't appoints new tax chief

Xinhua, November 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Latvian government on Tuesday appointed Ilze Cirule, a high-level insurance manager, as the new director-general of the State Revenue Service, local media reported.

Latvia's new tax chief was appointed more than five months after the resignation of the tax authority's previous head, Inara Petersone.

Cirule is due to take office on Nov. 14.

Answering ministers' questions at Tuesday's cabinet meeting, Cirule said she intended to consult the previous tax chief on the revenue service's work and planned reforms.

Cirule is also determined to work with ministries, social partners and other parties concerned to improve the tax authority's performance.

Earlier, Cirule spoke out in support of a reverse charging of value added tax wherever possible, explaining this would ensure greater financial transparency and help prevent tax avoidance.

Cirule has also promised an audit of the efficiency of the revenue service's employees. Endit
