UN says 32,000 displaced Sudanese return to Darfur region

The UN said that 32,000 Sudanese displaced persons have returned to their home villages in Darfur region from refugee camps in Chad and Central Africa Republic (CAR).

"According to a mission to five villages in Central Darfur's Um Dukhun locality, 32,000 people who were displaced in Chad, South Darfur and gatherings in Kabar have returned to their home villages," said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in its bulletin.

It said the returnees decided to return due to "the improved security situation in the locality."

OCHA further said that the main needs of the returnees are emergency shelter and household supplies; agricultural seeds and tools; water and sanitation services.

There are about 12 refugee camps in Chad accommodating around 282000 refugees from Sudan's Darfur region.

According to officials Sudanese statistics, around 110,000 Sudanese refugees have returned to the region during the past three years.

Thousands of Darfur people have fled the region to neighboring Chad after civil war erupted in the region in 2003. Endit
