A militant was killed and a trooper wounded Saturday during a gunfight in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.
The gunfight broke out near Dobjan village of Shopian district, about 60 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
"In a gunfight near forest area of Shopian, a militant was killed while a trooper was wounded fighting them," army officials said. "The wounded trooper was evacuated to military base hospital in Srinagar."
Meanwhile on Friday night, three policemen were wounded, one of them critically, after militants targeted their vehicle using an improvised explosive device (IED) at Dadsara village in neighboring Pulwama district.
A guerrilla war is going on between rebel militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. The majority of residents there would favor independence or incorporation into Pakistan.
Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their Independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir. Endit
