(Special for CAFS) Zambia energy regulator denies revising electricity tariffs

Zambia's energy regulator on Friday denied being behind a notice circulating on social media that electricity tariffs have been revised.

The notice indicates that the country's power utility, Zesco Limited, has proposed a 300 percent electricity tariff increment and sent its request to the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) for evaluation and possible implementation.

"The ERB would categorically like to state that electricity tariffs have not been revised nor has an application been submitted for consideration. Further, the ERB has not issued any notice calling for public comments contrary to reports circulating on social media," Kwali Mfuni, the regulator's spokesperson said in a statement.

The regulator has since urged people to disregard the notice, adding that the public will be duly notified when it adjusts the electricity tariffs.

On Thursday, the power utility dismissed the reports that electricity tariffs have been increased when the notice went viral on social media.

Last month, the regulator announced an upward increase in fuel pump price by 40 percent following the removal of subsidies and speculations are high that electricity tariffs will go up as the government has announced plans to remove subsidies on electricity. Endit
