Sweden extends ID checks for three more months

The Swedish government decided on Wednesday to extend photo ID checks on buses, trains and ferries into the country for three more months.

According to a government statement on Wednesday, the ID checks will be extended "by three months of passengers by bus, train or ferry between Sweden and Denmark. The decision will take effect on Nov. 4 and ends Feb. 4, 2017."

"The government has decided that the checks are necessary at present for public order and internal security in Sweden,"Anna Johansson, Sweden's infrastructure minister said in the statement.

The ID checks on rail, bus and ferry transports were introduced in January 2016 as Sweden struggled to get to grips with an influx of refugees to the country. Endit
