Tokyo shares close lower on rising U.S. election uncertainty

Tokyo stocks closed lower Wednesday with the Nikkei index briefly tumbling over 2 percent amid growing uncertainty over the U.S. presidential election.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 307.72 points, or 1.76 percent, from Tuesday at 17,134.68.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 24.75 points, or 1.78 percent, lower at 1,368.44.

Decliners were led by nonferrous metal, marine transportation and insurance issues.

The day's turnover was about 2,207.9 billion yen (around 21.25 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
