Kyrgyz police arrest man over airport bomb hoax

Xinhua, November 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Kyrgyzstan's security services on Monday detained a man for making a false bomb alert in an attempt to stop his wife's plane, the State Committee for National Security said Tuesday.

The Bishkek police received an anonymous call about a bomb in one of the planes at Manas Airport Monday afternoon, but an ensuing inspection of the aircraft and adjacent territory of the airport found no explosives at all.

Law enforcement later detained the man behind the bomb hoax, a Bishkek resident named Ilya Eremeev.

The 30-year-old man made the call being drunk, with the aim to stop his wife's business trip to Moscow, the committee said.

Investigators initiated a criminal case against the man on a "false report of an act of terrorism." Under the country's criminal law, he could face a penalty ranging from 180-240 hours of community service, or a fine of about 440 U.S. dollars, or correctional labor for up to a year, or imprisonment for up to three years.
