No cyanide was found in over 1,000 samples of seafood in the four provinces affected by a recent environmental incident, local media on Tuesday quoted a health official as saying.

The samples recently taken from waters within 20 nautical miles from the coast of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue provinces have been tested in Vietnam and abroad, and proved that the seafood there are safe to eat, daily newspaper Tuoi Tre quoted Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long as saying.

Meanwhile, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha confirmed results of testing seawater samples taken from the four central provinces since Sept. 20 have indicated that the waters are safe now.

A Taiwanese-invested steel complex named Formosa in Ha Tinh has recently found to have discharged wastewater with high contents of toxic substances to the sea, causing en-masse fish deaths.

On Monday, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh had working sessions with officials of the four central provinces about the environmental incident. He asked relevant agencies to disburse Formosa's compensation to local fishermen this month. Endit
