Lebanese president asks government to act as caretaker cabinet

Xinhua, November 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Lebanese President Michel Aoun on Monday asked Prime Minister Tammam Salam's government to continue working as a caretaker government until the new one is formed, the National News Agency (NNA) reported.

The directorate general of the presidency issued a statement, declaring that the president expressed his thanks to the prime minister and all ministers, and requested that the cabinet acts as a caretaker until the formation of a new one, the report said.

Lebanon's constitution states that when a new president is elected, the in-office cabinet is considered dissolved and the president immediately engages in parliamentary consultations to name the new prime minister to form the new cabinet.

Earlier on Monday, former army chief Michel Aoun was sworn in as Lebanon's 13th president, ending a vacancy that lasted almost two and a half years.

Lebanon had been without a president since May 2014, when former President Michel Suleiman's six-year term ended. Endit
