Tanzanian President John Magufuli said on Monday Kenya investments were leading in Tanzania among African countries and called for further improvement.

Speaking on his first official tour of Kenya in the capital Nairobi, Magufuli said statistics by the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) showed that Kenya has a total of 529 firms that have invested in the country.

"The 529 Kenyan firms have a total investment of 1.7 billion U.S. dollars employing 56,260 Tanzanians," said Magufuli, who is visiting Kenya for two days at the invitation of Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta,

A statement issued by Tanzanian Directorate of Presidential Communication from Nairobi said trade between Tanzania and Kenya has grown from 327 million U.S. dollars to 1 billion U.S. dollars.

"Let me assure you that our cooperation is flourishing and will continue to thrive as we go on. Kenya is leading in investing in Tanzania among African countries," Magufuli told a news conference in Nairobi.

He added: "When we work together very closely our economies grow impressively and our peoples become prosperous."

The Tanzanian leader emphasized the need for strengthened relations between the two east African countries that were established by founding presidents Julius Nyerere and Jomo Kenyatta.

For his part, President Kenyatta thanked President Magufuli for accepting his invitation to visit Kenya and assured him of continued good relations

"For us Tanzania is our brother and sister. Our historical relations will continue to be nurtured for the benefit of the two countries," said Kenyatta.

Kenyatta said Kenya will continue working closely with Tanzania toward the implementation of various development projects, including infrastructure. Endit
