The African Union (AU) on Friday strongly condemned the recent Al-Shabaab attack in Kenya.
Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson of the AU Commission, "condemns in the strongest terms the terrorist attack that killed at least 12 people in the northeastern border town of Mandera on 25 Oct.," said a statement from the pan-African bloc on Friday.
The attack, which was claimed by the Al Qaeda-linked terrorist group Al-Shabaab, was the second in Mandera in less than three weeks, said the statement.
The Chairperson has expressed AU's heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wished speedy recovery to the injured.
She assures the government and people of Kenya of AU's full solidarity and support in the difficult circumstances, noted the statement.
She has reiterated AU's readiness to support Kenya and the countries of the region through the existing regional and continental mechanisms including, the Djibouti process on the Enhancement of Security Cooperation in the East Africa region and the AU Convention on Cross Border Cooperation, known as the Niamey convention, which contains provisions related to border security.
The Chairperson of the AU Commission has appealed to the international community to renew its commitment to defeat terrorists groups, whose only agenda is to cause havoc, destruction and death, by providing the necessary support to the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) engaged in efforts to defeat the terrorist group in Somalia, according to the statement.
