Sofia Airport welcomes more passengers, cargo in 2016

Sofia Airport reported record high results in the first nine months of 2016 in passenger flow, flights and processed cargo, the airport said in a statement on Friday.

A total of 3.6 million passengers passed through Sofia Airport from January to September this year, a 15-percent increase compared to the same period of 2015, the statement said.

In particular, the number of passengers on scheduled international flights rose by 18 percent due to the increase of frequencies on a large number of operated routes as well as the opening of 20 new destinations, the statement said.

Meanwhile, the number of aircraft that landed and departed from Sofia Airport increased by 13 percent year-on-year, and processed cargo and mail shipments went up by 14 percent and 11 percent respectively, the statement said.

Sofia Airport is the largest airport in Bulgaria. In 2015, the airport serviced a total of 44,416 aircraft and 4,064,755 passengers, and processed 16,740 tonnes of freight, official data showed. Endit
