Albanian fishing industry facing serious situation: experts

Xinhua, October 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

The fish processing industry in Albania has registered a growth of production during the last two years but now it is facing a serious situation related to fish export quotas in the EU market, experts from the Albanian ministry of agriculture said Thursday.

The revenues from the exports of fish and fish products during the ninth month period of 2016 amounted to 3.3 billion leks (26.2 million U.S. dollars), while for the same period of 2015 exports value was at 2.4 billion leks, official data showed.

But following such improvement, the fishing industry has been exporting with a lower rate by 25 percent from September, 2016, because the free quota for fish exports was 1,600 tons per year, and such figure has been completed, Alban Zusi told local media here.

According to him, the export of fish and fish products will expect a drastic drop during the upcoming months while some plants risk bankruptcy as they cannot afford this cost.

He further explained that the government institutions have been informed about the situation and also asked to negotiate the increase of export quotas with the EU institutions. Endit
