Sisi says reconciliation with Muslim Brotherhood "not solely" his decision

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi said that reconciliation with the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group is not solely his decision, official Ahram Online reported Thursday.

Sisi made the remarks during a seminar at a national youth conference in the country's Red Sea resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh.

"I was the one who provided the Brotherhood with the opportunity on July 3," Sisi said, referring to the day former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi was removed from power in 2013.

Morsi was ousted by the army following massive protests against his one-year rule. After his removal, Sisi, who was then the army chief, announced a three-step roadmap that was largely supported by political powers, youth leaders and senior religious clerics.

The Egyptian president revealed that he cannot make a decision on reconciliation by himself, adding that "it is the decision of the state."

The Muslim Brotherhood, the largest opposition group in Egypt for decades, was labeled by the government as a terror group, with most of its leaders in jail facing charges of conspiracy, treason and threatening the national security of Egypt. Endit
