Nigeria confirms return of 39 missing soldiers

At least 39 Nigerian soldiers declared missing after last week suspected Boko Haram insurgents' attack in the border town of Gashigar in restive northeast state of Borno had returned, the Army said Thursday.

"I want to inform you that a sizable number of our soldiers had returned to base," Maj.-Gen. Lucky Irabor, the Theater Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, told a news conference in Maiduguri, the state capital.

He added that a few soldiers are yet to be found.

According to him, the military is engaged in an ongoing operation to uproot the terrorists from the area.

The military chief added that the military is focusing on rescuing the remaining Chibok girls from the Boko Haram terrorists in spite of the recent release of the 21 girls by the insurgents.

He said the military had achieved progress in its quest to apprehend collaborators of the Boko Haram terrorists in the northeast.

Irabor added that the suspects were under going interrogation to determine their level of involvement in the crime.

Nigeria's northeast region has been a stronghold of the extremist group Boko Haram. Over the past months, the Nigerian government has launched several military operations to eliminate the terrorist group. Endit
