India, New Zealand agree to bolster economic, security ties

Xinhua, October 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

India and New Zealand Wednesday agreed to engage in greater economic engagement to effectively tackle the growing uncertainties of global economy and forge a stronger relationship to deal with international terrorism.

Addressing a joint media meet after holding talks with visiting New Zealand Prime Minister John Key in the national capital, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Both of us had detailed and productive discussions on all aspects of our bilateral engagement and multilateral cooperation."

"We both recognized need for greater economic engagement in order to effectively respond to the growing uncertainties in the global economy. We have agreed to work towards the early completion of Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement," he added.

Underlying the need for the world to come together to tackle terrorism, Modi said: "Terrorism remains one of the major challenges affecting global peace. Prime Minister Key and I agreed to strengthen security and intelligence cooperation against terror and radicalization, including cyber security."

On his part, Key asserted New Zealand's commitment towards building a strong relationship with India. "New Zealand and India already share a very strong relationship, be it in trade or cricket.

We have a genuine interest in India's success and we intend to remain true and honest," he said.

The New Zealand prime minister added the two countries agreed to continue close coordination on the range of security issues, including international terrorism.

Key arrived in India Tuesday on a three-day tour, during which he will also go to the southern state of Kerala's city of Kochi. Endit
