60 pct of Japan's firms affected by labor shortage: survey

Some 63.2 percent of firms in Japan suffered from negative effects caused by shortage of staff, according to a survey released by Japan's Ministry of Finance on Tuesday.

According to the survey, some 74.7 percent of small and medium-sized companies and 56.6 percent of large enterprises suffered from shortage of hands.

Among the companies, about 75.4 percent of non-manufacturing firms suffered from shortage of hands, while the figure for manufacturing companies is 47.7 percent.

As for negative effects caused by shortage of staff, 56 percent of firms said that it adds to workload of its employees who, as a result, have worked overtime. Some 8 percent of manufacturing firms and 15.3 percent of non-manufacturing firms said that it costs them business opportunities.

Compared to the situation a year ago, some 31.4 percent of firms said the labor shortage is more serious now, while 62.4 percent said the situation is the same as a year ago.

The survey is based on replies from 1,366 companies between early September and mid-October. Endit
