Kenya's new chief judge pledges to prioritize fight against graft

Xinhua, October 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Kenya's newly-appointed Chief Justice David Maraga has pledged to prioritize the fight against corruption and resolve any election disputes in the 2017 elections.

Justice Maraga, who was sworn in office on Wednesday by President Uhuru Kenyatta, pledged to improve service delivery in the justice sector by eliminating corruption within its ranks, reduce the backlog of cases and automate court proceedings.

"I will aspire to enhance access to justice for all and improve performance and accountability within the judiciary," said Maraga, who became the 17th chief justice of Kenya.

Maraga also assured Kenyans that the judiciary is ready to satisfactorily determine any disputes arising from the electioneering process.

He added that the judiciary shall continue investing in cultivating trust and confidence of the citizenry in its arbitral role in electoral disputes.

Speaking at the event, Kenyatta said the executive is keen to partner with the judiciary in ensuring Kenyans receive efficient services.

Kenyatta noted that in the last five years, Kenyans have witnessed changes in the judiciary but he added that the reforms will be meaningless unless Kenyans get quick and effective judicial services. Endit
