Egypt arrests 3 illegal migration brokers

Xinhua, October 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Egypt arrested on Wednesday three illegal migration brokers for massing youths seeking to travel to Italy illegally via the sea in return for money, official MENA news agency said.

The detainees, all from Alexandria governorate, admitted to have committed the crime and were held in custody for further investigation.

In September, some 200 people, mostly Egyptians, died in a migration boat carrying hundreds that capsized off Egypt's northern coast of Rosetta en route to Italy.

Illegal migration via Egyptian Mediterranean Sea shores to Europe rose over the past few years. Migrants were fleeing difficult economic conditions in the financially-struggling Arab country, where unemployment rate hits 12.5 percent according to official reports.

Meanwhile, Egyptian security forces foiled Wednesday an attempt by 59 people to infiltrate into Libya via Salloum crossing on the Egyptian-Libyan borders.

The 59 people included 44 Egyptians and 15 Sudanese nationals. Endit
