Top news items in major Zambian media outlets

The following are news highlights in Zambia's major media outlets on Wednesday.

-- Zambia's finance minister will present the 2017 national budget on November 11, the Ministry of Finance has announced.

Felix Mutati, who was appointed as the new finance minister in President Edgar Lungu's new government, is scheduled to announce the budget in which key economic reform measures will be unveiled. (Zambia Daily mail)

-- Zambia recorded a wood waste processing volume of 3.5 million cubic meters between 2008 and 2015, an industry body has said.

The Zambia National Association of Saw Millers said the waste could have generated the sector income if well utilized. (Times of Zambia)

-- Zambian President Edgar Lungu said he could not release people arrested in connection with the recently held general elections because the law has to be followed.

The main opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) said over 2,000 of its supporters across the country were arrested during the general elections and are currently languishing in prison. Some have been charged with aggravated robbery which is not bailable.

The opposition party has asked Lungu to release them because they were not criminals but were only protecting the votes. But Lungu said he could not release them because the matter was before courts of law. He however said he could only pardon them after the due process of the law. (Daily Nation) Endit
