France's EDF to close five reactors for safety tests

Xinhua, October 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

France's Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) on Tuesday called on EDF utility to shut down power production at five of its nuclear reactors to conduct safety tests, the regulator said in a statement.

The state-run utility should carry out more safety tests on the five concerned reactors within three months and before their scheduled maintenance period, according to the nuclear watchdog.

The ASN added the five reactors should be tested due to "high carbon concentrations" which could weaken their resilience.

Tests have already been carried out or are currently being carried out on seven of 12 reactors which contain parts manufactured by a Japanese foundry "likely to have a particularly high carbon concentration," the regulator said, adding all will be made during their planned maintenance period.

The statement added EDF accepted the new schedule and the shutdown production at the Fessenheim (reactor 1), Gravelines (reactor 4), Civaux (reactor1) and Tricastin (reactors 2,4) plants. Endit
