Russian naval flotilla arrives in Iran's Anzali port

Xinhua, October 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Russian naval flotilla arrived in Iran's port city of Anzali on Tuesday, semi-official Mehr news agency reported.

The arrival of Russian naval flotilla is conveying messages of peace and will help improve bilateral ties, Iran's Rear Admiral Afshin Rezaei Haddad was quoted as saying.

"Russian fleets have regularly paid visits to Iranian ports to which we responded with dispatch of Iran's naval fleets to Russia's Astrakhan in September," Rezaei Haddad said.

More fleets from Caspian littoral states would arrive in Iran's northern ports in the future, he said, adding that the navies of five Caspian littoral countries are cooperating to secure it as the sea for peace, mutual respect and good-neighborliness.

The visiting Russian naval flotilla is comprised of several warships, including a frigate named "Tatarstan" and a corvette named "Grad Sviyazhsk," according to Tasnim news agency.

On Sunday, Iran's naval fleet, comprised of Damavand destroyer and Joshan missile vessel with 200 navy forces on board, headed to Azerbaijan's port city of Baku on the Caspian Sea coast for a three-day visit.

Iran has sent several fleets with the same mission from the country's northern and southern waters to the high seas. Endit
