Nairobi bourse registers low equity turnover

Some 7.7 million shares valued at 1.4 million U.S. dollars were traded Tuesday at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), down from 11 million worth 2.4 million dollars the previous day.

ON Tuesday, only one stock recorded over a million shares in trading, with investors keeping off favorites like Safaricom, Equity Bank and Kenya Commercial Bank.

The NIC Bank was the top mover, with 1.2 million shares changing hands at 0.27 dollars, a drop of 3 percent. In the banking sector, some 2.2 million shares were traded in total, representing 29 percent of the day's traded volume.

Safaricom, East African nation's leading telecom and the best performing stock at the bourse, moved 909,000 shares at 0.09 dollars.

The energy sector, mainly represented by Total Kenya and KenolKobil, two oil marketers, had 1.5 million shares traded and represented 19 percent of the day's traded volume.

Despite the low trading, the NSE 20 Share Index went up 5.99 points to stand at 3,249.67. Similarly, the All Share Index (NASI) edged 0.24 points higher to stand at 136.63 and the NSE 25 Share Index added 15.03 points to stand at 3,617.14. Endit
