Xinhua, October 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

More than 19,000 asylum applications have been registered in the Netherlands during the first three quarters of this year, said Statistics Netherlands (CBS) on Tuesday.

From January to September, 3,700 Syrian family members came to the Netherlands to join their relatives, more than twice the number of Syrian asylum seekers for the same period. So far, Syrian nationals again constitute the largest group, followed by Albanians, and Eritreans. More than six in ten joining relatives were Syrian nationals.

For the third quarter, about 7,500 asylum seekers and joining relatives were registered, a number almost equal to the first quarter, after a dip in the second quarter.

Last year some 50,000 to 60,000 refugees arrived in the Netherlands while in 2014, the country had received 24,000 asylum requests. For 2016, the Dutch government has based its budget calculations on an estimation of 58,000 incoming refugees. Endit
