Defense ministers of anti-IS coalition to meet next week in Paris

Xinhua, October 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Defense ministers of countries participating in the international coalition against the Islamic State (IS) will meet in Paris on Oct. 25, according to local reports.

The officials will evaluate the situation in Iraq after they launched a vast operation to reconquer Mosul, the militants' stronghold in Iraq, reports said.

Citing a source close to French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, news channel BFMTV reported 12 ministers including U.S. Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter will attend the Paris meeting.

France was one of the first European countries to join the U.S.-led coalition against IS. Its fighter jets have bombed the group in Iraq since 2014.

On Sunday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced the start of an offensive to retake Mosul.

Mosul, some 400 km north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, has been under IS control since June 2014. Endit
