1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares end 7-day winning streak to fall

Xinhua, October 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

Chinese stocks ended a seven-day winning streak to fall on Monday, with sentiment soured by a late-afternoon tumble in Shanghai's U.S. dollar-denominated B shares as the yuan continued to weaken.

The Shanghai Composite Index dipped 0.74 percent to close at 3,041.17 points. The Shenzhen Component Index retreated 1.01 percent to finish at 10,651.5 points.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style enterprises, lost 1.2 percent to close at 2,167.86 points.

Turnover stood at 540.15 billion yuan (around 80.14 billion U.S. dollars).

The B-share sell-off came amid increasing worries about the yuan's value, which hit a six-year low against the greenback on Monday.

B-shares are dollar-denominated shares in Chinese companies and are thus vulnerable to further yuan depreciation.

Environment-related shares led the declines, with the sub-index for the board falling 2.03 percent. Beijing GeoEnviron Engineering & Technology slid 3.74 percent to close at 33.49 yuan. Tianjin Capital Environment Protection Group ended 3.53 percent lower at 9.01 yuan. Endi
