Tokyo shares open higher on strong U.S. stocks

Tokyo shares opened higher Monday on strong U.S. stocks before the weekend due to solid U.S. retail sales data for September.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 31.43 points, or 0.19 percent, from Friday to 16,887.80.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 2.93 points, or 0.22 percent, to 1,350.12.

Gainers were led by mining, iron and steel and nonferrous metal issues. Endit
