Police in north China's Tianjin Municipality have detained seven people for allegedly capturing and trading wild birds after a campaign started last Sunday.
The two-month campaign came after more than 3,000 live birds were rescued from mist nets during the National Day holiday from Oct. 1 to 7.
Among the suspects, one surnamed Zhuang, who was detained on Thursday, confessed to illegally catching more than 600 wild birds since August and selling them for about 10,000 yuan (1,500 U.S. dollars), according to a spokesperson with the city's public security bureau.
So far, the police have removed 9,310 meters of nets, raided 79 centers for the trade of birds, and found over 1,700 birds, said the spokesperson.
Many migratory birds stopover in Tianjin in autumn and illegal netting has become a serious problem.
Wang Jianmin, a volunteer who participated in an early October rescue, said they had found nets in past years, but not as many as this year. Endi
