Croatian parliament decides to change gov't structure

Xinhua, October 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Croatia's new parliament has adopted several laws to change the structure of government bodies ahead of voting on a new cabinet.

The parliament decided at its first session after inauguration on Friday evening to reduce the number of ministries from 20 to 19, local newspaper Jutarnji List reported on Saturday.

The Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Crafts will be merged with the Ministry of Economy, the report said.

While the current Ministry of Environmental Protect and Nature will take over the energy department from the Ministry of Economy, as well as the water management department from the Ministry of Agriculture. It will be named as the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Energy.

The Ministry of Demography, Family, Youth and Social Policy will be reorganized from current the Ministry of Social Welfare Policy and Youth. It will focus on issues of demographic renewal, families and young people.

Moreover, the government's deputy ministers will be replaced by state secretaries. Instead of one deputy minister for each ministry, now it will be able to have several state secretaries directly below the minister, the report said.

The new government is expected to take office on Tuesday or Wednesday, it added. Endit
