The Spanish Interior Ministry confirmed on Saturday that six people have been arrested with four taken to prison after breaking up a people smuggling ring dedicated to introducing Sub-Saharan immigrants into Spain and the European Union.
The immigrants had to pay smugglers 3,000 euros (around 3,300 U.S. dollars) in their homeland and upon reaching Morocco they were ferried across the Mediterranean to the coast of Granada and Cadiz in southern Spain or to the Canary Islands in rubber dinghies, the ministry said.
Upon arrival in Spain and after being housed in temporary immigrant residencies, the immigrants re-established contact with members of the network using phone numbers they were given prior to departure, authorities found.
They then made their way to Madrid from where they travelled to other countries in the European Union, especially France, Germany and Switzerland, according to the ministry. Endit
