Kenya set to host key UN meeting to combat desertification

Xinhua, October 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Kenya will next week host a key United Nations forum aimed at combating desertification, a senior government official said on Friday.

Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Natural Resources Professor Judi Wakhungu said more than 1,000 delegates will congregate in Nairobi from Oct. 18-20 for the 15th session of the UN Committee of Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 15).

"The forum aims to combat desertification and mitigate the effects of drought in the countries affected through effective action at all levels," Wakhungu said in a statement issued in Nairobi.

The Conference, hosted by the ministry of environment and natural resources, will be held at the UN Offices and is supported by international cooperation and partnership arrangements in the framework of an integrated approach to help achieve sustainable development.

CRIC is a subsidiary body of UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) which is tasked with tracking the implementation of the conventions by parties.

CRIC 15 will allow parties to discuss key elements for a new strategy, findings from the optional reports and future modalities for reporting.

Wakhungu said the session will further guide UNCCD in mainstreaming the Sustainable Development Goals. Enditem
