Bulgaria destroys illicit drugs worth almost 30 mln USD

Bulgarian authorities on Friday burned 465 kg illicit narcotic substances worth almost 30 million U.S. dollars, the National Customs Agency.

The drugs, among them 200 kg of marijuana, 178 kg of Ecstasy, 40 kg of heroin, 29 kg of cocaine and 5 kg of amphetamine were seized by the agency and the Ministry of Interior in the course of more than 1,050 criminal proceedings, according to a statement by the agency.

Authorities estimated the total value of the destroyed drugs on the black market would be nearly 52 million BGN (some 29.3 million U.S. dollars).

Bulgaria is a key transit route for drugs smuggled from Asia to Europe. Over the last 16 years, authorities organized and implemented 54 procedures for destruction of drugs with a total weight of 36.5 tons, the statement said. Endit
