Petrov elected as speaker of new Croatia parliament

Xinhua, October 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Croatia's new parliament on Friday elected Bozo Petrov, former vice prime minister and leader of the MOST party, as the speaker of the 151-seat assembly.

Petrov, the sole candidate for the post, received support from 132 lawmakers, while 12 others abstained from voting and one person voted against in the first parliamentary session since the early elections held on Sept. 11.

Petrov, 37, will preside over the parliament for the first two years of the four-year term when the position will then be passed on to a representative from the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), according to the agreement reached between HDZ and MOST.

Petrov, a psychiatrist, appeared on the political stage in 2013 during a local election in which he became the mayor of Metkovic, a town of southern Croatia, after defeating his senior opponent who had been the mayor of the town for 16 years. Endit
