Ukraine's energy resources sufficient to pass through winter: PM

Xinhua, October 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Ukraine has enough energy resources to ensure uninterrupted supplies of heat and power during the cold season, Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman said here on Thursday.

"We have sufficient amount of gas and electricity. We are completely ready to start the heating season where it has not started yet," Groysman told a cabinet meeting.

Meanwhile, Sergiy Pereloma, a deputy chief of Ukraine's national energy company Naftogaz, who also took part in the meeting, said that some 14.8 billion cubic meters of gas have been accumulated in the country's storage facilities on the eve of the heating season.

Separately, Energy and Coal Industry Minister Igor Nasalyk has informed that Ukraine' s reserves of coal, which is used for electricity generation, stand at 1.766 million tons.

Initially, the government planned to stock at least 2.7 million tons of coal ahead of the cold season, while the European Commission has recommended Ukraine to boost its gas stocks to 17 billion cubic meters to smoothly pass through winter.

The heating season, which started in Ukraine this week, runs until April 2017. Endit
