Bluetongue disease in sheep was registered in the Srebrenica municipality, some 130 km northeast of here, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina(BiH), local media reported on Thursday.
The disease has killed between 60 and 100 animals so far, according to BiH news agency Fena.
"The disease is currently stagnant because of the cooler weather and less mosquito activity in this time of the year, and it is well-known that the mosquitos are the main carriers of the virus causing this disease," said Hasmir Mujcinovic, veterinary inspector of the Srebrenica municipality.
The veterinary teams are on the field, taking blood samples and sending them for analysis, added Mujcinovic.
Bluetongue disease is a non-contagious, insect-borne disease mainly found among sheep and cattle. Symptoms of the disease include high fever, excessive salivation and swelling of the face and tongue. Swelling of the lips and tongue sometimes gives the ruminants' tongue a blue appearance. Endit
