Georgia's ruling party takes lead in gaining parliamentary seats

Xinhua, October 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Georgia's ruling party Georgian Dream took the lead in gaining seats in parliament with 49 percent of the vote, according to the Central Election Commission.

The preliminary results of the parliamentary elections held Saturday showed that the opposition United National Movement (UNM) gained 27 percent of the vote and the ultranationalist Alliance of Patriots obtained 5 percent -- the threshold required for a party to win seats in parliament.

According to Georgia's election rules, 77 seats of the 150-member parliament will go to the parties elected in proportional voting based on party lists, while the remaining 73 seats will be elected in 73 majoritarian, single-mandate constituencies.

Among the 77 seats, the Georgian Dream will get 44, the UNM 27 and the Alliance of Patriots six.

With Georgian Dream candidates winning in 23 majoritarian districts that secured another 23 seats, the ruling party will have 67 seats in parliament. Endi
