Indian police said Wednesday that the 56-hour-long stand-off at a government building in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir had ended.
The fierce gunfight ended with the killing of two militants, who engaged troops since Monday morning.
"The encounter started on Monday between the militants and security forces," a police spokesman said. "During this encounter two militants were killed."
An army trooper was wounded fighting militants during the gunfight on first day. Officials said one militant was killed on Tuesday, however, his accomplice was fighting until Wednesday.
A senior police official Syed Javaid Mujtaba Gilani told media they were investigating how militants managed to enter the building.
"We are investigating how the militants reached here and who are the people who assisted them," Gilani told reporters in Pampore.
The multi-storey building has suffered massive damage because of the heavy exchange of gunfire and mortar shells. Endit
