A senior Iranian official said that Iran and Russia must boost strategic cooperation on Syria, Press TV reported

"Iran and Russia must strengthen their strategic cooperation on regional and international issues, especially the ongoing crisis in Syria," Ali Akbar Velayati, said a senior advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader.

"Strong and strategic relations between the two countries are very important in the establishment of regional peace and stability and the settlement of issues," Velayati said in a meeting with the visiting Russian special envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev.

Iran and Russia are the main allies of the Syrian government and nation and this cooperation has played an important role in regional developments and the recent achievements by the Syrian government and people, he was quoted as saying.

Velayati stressed the future of Syria should be decided by the Syrian people through political talks. Endit
