Portugal's Ministry of Education has authorized the hiring of 300 teachers for schools after teaching union Fenprof denounced the closing of establishments due to a lack of staff, local media reported on Tuesday.
"The Ministry of Education will go ahead with the first enhancement of operational assistants at schools," the ministry said in a statement.
Fenprof said in a separate statement that a school in Lisbon was closed on Tuesday and another school in north Portugal had been closing earlier due to the lack of staff.
Syndicates representing school staff alerted at the beginning of the school year that the country was lacking around 6,000 teachers.

The Socialist government, in power since November, has vowed to reverse austerity and Prime Minister Antonio Costa has said education is one of his priorities in terms of investment. Endit
