Unidentified gunmen Monday night attacked a bar, killing three persons and seriously injuring three others at Ruteme in Rumonge province, some 40 km south of the Burundian capital Bujumbura, police sources said Tuesday.
"The attack was carried out by four persons and two of them had guns. The attacked bar was near Ruteme fundamental school. The gunmen first blasted a grenade inside the bar and opened fire inside it, killing three persons on the spot and seriously injuring three others," said Donatien Manirakiza, police commissioner in Rumonge province.
According to him, the three people who were killed include the director of Ruteme fundamental school, his uncle and a teacher at that school.
Manirakiza added that people who were injured were immediately evacuated to Rumonge hospital.
"After the attack, the gunmen ran away. We have launched an investigation to identify and arrest them," said Manirakiza.
Burundi plunged in a crisis since April 2015 when Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza decided to run his controversial third term despite the national constitution and the 2000 Arusha Agreement.
Violence had however reduced in the east African nation during the recent months.
More than 500 people in Burundi have been killed and the UN Refugee Agency estimates that about 300,000 people fled to neighboring countries, mostly Tanzania, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) and Uganda since the outbreak of the crisis. Endit
