Namibia continues to harness clean energy

Xinhua, October 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

In an effort to relieve the pressure on the national electricity grid, Namibia is constructing a solar generation facility, Osona Sun Energy, located approximately 60 km north from the capital Windhoek.

The plant, nearing completion, has a capacity of 4.5 MW, similar to another solar plant the Omburu Solar photovoltaic plant which was constructed by French- Namibian investors and started operation last year.

The Development Bank of Namibia (DBN) on Monday announced that it would provide finance for the project and the plant will operate in terms of a power purchase agreement (PPA) with NamPower.

DBN Head of Lending John Mbango said that the establishment of the Omburu photovoltaic plant proceeded smoothly and has shown its operational capacity.

"The Bank welcomes additional applications from enterprises. This open door policy, encourages reinvestment of profits in related or other areas on the part of enterprises that have proven their ability to prosper, and contribute to Namibia's economic growth," he added.

Furthermore, Mbango said that on the basis of the photovoltaic projects in Namibia, they have developed a strong body of knowledge on the business model and technology and skills required for a solar park.

"We will welcome applications from other projects in the same field, as well as other renewables, subject to demand and feasibility of PPAs with NamPower," he said.

Meanwhile the construction of the solar plant will be a positive move in realizing the aim of generating 10 percent of installed generation capacity from renewable energy as per Namibia's renewable energy policy. Endit
