A cargo ship carrying 44 people sank in waters off Vietnam's central Quang Tri province on Tuesday, leaving one dead.

According to the Border Guard Command of Quang Tri, some 480 km south of capital Hanoi, the ship sailed from Quang Tri's Cua Tung port to Con Co island.

At 10:30 a.m. (0330 GMT), in waters 5 km away from the island, the ship suddenly sank, reported local VNExpress online newspaper.

The incident killed one victim while some 43 others were rescued by three local fishing boats.

Local authorities are looking into reason of the incident, said VNExpress. Endit
