Fijian PM to pay official visit to Australia, New Zealand

Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama will be making an official visit to Australia and New Zealand later this week, the government-owned Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) confirmed Tuesday.

Fiji's Industry and Trade Minister Faiyaz Koya said this will double as a trade visit to promote Fiji as an investment destination.

"These are our traditional trade partners, anyways, with Australia and New Zealand, and we're trying to promote more and more investment. We're trying to grow our economic base and some of the areas we decided to target were agriculture and ICT (information and communications technology) or tourism," Koya told the FBC.

Koya confirmed that Prime Minister Bainimarama will be opening a symposium in Sydney, Australia and be delivering an address in Auckland, New Zealand.

The visit will be Bainimarama's first official visit to New Zealand in his role as prime minister.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key paid a two-day official visit to Fiji in June. Last month, Bainimarama invited Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to visit Fiji when the two prime ministers met while attending the United Nations General Assembly. Endit
